Bertolt Brecht - Happy End

Bertolt Brecht

(1898-1956)
German playwright, director and poet, Brecht is regarded as one of the most influential figures in 20th century drama. With his

A Man’s a Man

(1926) he introduced the so-called alienation effect (A-effect). It is a technique based on the emotional detachment of the actors and the audience from the drama, in order to focus on the intellectual side and emphasise the political meaning.
In 1928 Brecht married Helene Weigel, an Austrian actress and manager who took the leading roles in most of his plays including the title Mother Courage in

Mother Courage and Her Children

(1941). Brecht also collaborated with a German composer Kurt Weill. Together they produced such musical dramas as

The Threepenny Opera

(1928),

The Rise and Fall of the City of Mahogonny

(1927), and

Happy End

(1928).
